Obituaries

2020 continues to be an eventful year, with both of my grandmas recently passing away less than a month apart. Since the Rockhampton Morning Bulletin is no longer in print to publish obituaries, I thought it would be worth preserving a copy of both the funeral notices here for posterity. I’ve also saved a copy of the Eulogy for both Marie and Isabel. This photo of them both at tennis club was a nice suprise to come across.
The Guinman's

The Guinman's

Part of thinking of names for a child is deciding on which surname to use. There are lots of different ways of choosing surnames other than the modern English way of taking the paternal one. The wiki page on surnames is supringly detailed. After having a unique name like Guinane, I didn’t want Newman as a surname because it’s too common. Looking at US Census Data it’s not actually as highly ranked as I was expecting, but still a lot more popular then Guinane.

DNA Genealogy

While we were mostly interested in the health aspect, the main selling point on ads for DNA tests is seeing your ancestry. I was expecting the results for that part to be pretty underwhelming, and they were - confirming I am indeed descended from European immigrants. The matching is really interesting though, it finds sections of your DNA that match that of others, and sums the shared segments which are measured in centimorgans.
