Last weekend we went to Lamington National Park again, however just camped at the normal camp sites no hike-in camping.
We went the long way to get there so we could detour past Allora and see if the Sunflowers were in season for Bec. They weren’t really but there was one field at the racecourse.
We went to O’Reilly’s last time so would have been good to go to the Binna Burra end instead, but Darcy told us of the Treetop Walk.
Last weekend we went down to the Granite Belt area again, this time camping and prepared for the hike up Pyramid Rock. Last time was just before winter, we didn’t prepare for it and Rachael was wearing jeans, so she didn’t make it to the top.
There was severe weather warnings forecast for the weekend, but when we left Saturday lunch time the skies were clear and it looked like while there was some big storms closer to the coast we should just get some patchy rain.
Since we spent Christmas in Toowoomba this year, Rachael wanted to head to the beach for New Years. Given we tried booking about a day before, almost everywhere at Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast were booked, and so we decided to stay inland a bit at Murwillumbah YHA. The area around there was great and there was awesome views from the deck of the Tweed River and Mt Warning.
On the drive down we stopped around the Palm Beach area and it was busy as.
We went up to the Bunya Mountains again last weekend. Unlike last time, we stayed in a cabin with some friends, as it was a pretty cold weekend. Here’s some photos.
Rachael is doing her final nursing placement in Boonah. So prior to the placement we went for a drive to see what the town and surrounding areas were like last October.
The drive through Cunningham’s Gap is spectacular. The western side is rainforest, and the eastern side provides views of some really steep sections of the great dividing range. There is a nice rainforest walk at the very top, but unfortunately the lookout that you walk to doesn’t have a very good view.
On Sunday we went for a drive to Goomburra State Forest, which is part of the Main Range National Park. There was a tonne of people camping there because of the long weekend.
There is a road right up to the top, although we had to do a creek crossing in Rachael’s Yaris. From Mt Castle lookout you are supposed to be able to see Brisbane, but it was a pretty hazy day so we couldn’t even see Mt Cootha.
Last weekend Rachael had the weekend off work, so we went for a drive down to see the Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Region. We stayed at Sommerville Valley Tourist Park which is on Storm King Dam. They had kayak’s you could take out and we are keen to go back in Summer when the water is less freezing.
On the way we did the fruit run tourist drive and had a look at some of the wineries.
Over the Easter weekend we went on a 2-day hike in Lamington National Park with our roommate and some of his friends. It was my first time camping where you have to carry everything with you, and can’t just drive to the camp site. This meant we put a lot of thought into what to bring, and took a lot less gear then normal. Ultimately this led to a much less pleasant camping experience as no swag meant for a very uncomfortable sleep, and we didn’t have hot food.
Rachael had last weekend off work so we went to the Bunya Mountains to camp. The drive up was pretty good, we stopped at Acland (a ghost town) on the way, and closer to the mountains we saw an echidna on the side of the road.
We had lunch at the main “The Bunyas” restaurant which was good, but not great. There was tonnes of awesome rainforest walks from here, which is where the main campsite is.
My next rotation for work is field, and as the training in Toowoomba was cancelled, I had to go to Townsville for a couple of weeks to do the training up there. Luckily Rachael was able to come up on the weekend and we got to go see The Cat Empire play at Magnetic Island, amongst other site seeing.
