Zamia Walk

Zamia Walk

The National Parks Website doesn’t have any info about this walk for some reason. There were signs at the top and bottom with information though. The ascent trail starts at First Turkey just past the waterhole and toilet block for the mountain bike tracks, with a sign that says to allow for 4 hours each way. We were staying with Rachael’s parents whilst in Rocky so I just walked from there with the plan to meet Rachael at the top for lunch.
Rocky (again)

Rocky (again)

We were up in Rocky again (for the 4th time this year), this time for my cousin Kate’s wedding. Making the most of our time there, we tried to do more sightseeing. Firstly, we went and saw the new lookout at Mt Archer. It had been nice and warm in Rocky compared to Toowoomba, but we went up pretty early in the morning and up the top there was a bitterly cold breeze like we get in Tbah.

In 2012 my friend Jan visited from Switzerland and I did a post Sightseeing at Home and I showed him some of the tourist places around town. Rachael’s sister Lauren was visiting after living in the UK for over 2 years, and so I thought I’d do another post on more Rockhampton tourist things we did this year. Capricorn Caves When we were up at Christmas, Rachael wanted to go see the Summer Solstice Tour at the Capricorn Caves.

Sunrise on Christmas Day

We got up at 4:00 on Christmas to go for a surf. The surf was terrible until the tide came in a bit, but at least we arrived just in time to see the sun rise.

Sightseeing at Home

Before coming down to Brisbane for my new graduate rotation, I wanted to do one last trip to visit all the cool places Rocky has to offer while I still had the chance. When you live somewhere, people never seem to visit the places nearby because it will always be there and there is no pressure resulting from a lack of time in the area. On my last weekend before leaving, Jan, one of my roommates from Switzerland, just happened to be flying into Australia before starting his new graduate rotation for ABB in Melbourne.
Rockhampton Floods

Rockhampton Floods

So the reason why I had so much trouble getting home was because of the floods. So here are some photos and links about it. This is why my flight was cancelled (it got higher than that): And NASA had some satellite images that show just how much water there was during and after: NASA source link here and here. With the airport underwater and the highway and railway closed to the south, it cut down my transport options, but it wasn’t completely isolated like the media said.
